Buying a House at 21

Our agent Jonathan is only 21 years old, and he started out this year with a big goal: to buy his first home. Last week he closed on that home, and he joined us on The Landis Look this week to share his experience, as well as his best tips for buying a home at 21—or at any age!

  1. Look at it like an investor.

What can you buy now that’s going to set you up for a good future? If you’re not sure, we can help you figure out the right neighborhoods and what to look for in a home to achieve your goals.

  2. It’s a huge purchase, but don’t let that scare you.

Buying a house is one of the biggest purchases you’ll ever make, and that can seem intimidating. Find the right professionals to guide you and stay focused on what you hope to get out of it. It might help to remember: with Atlanta’s rapidly rising rental costs, the mortgage on a house can be a more affordable monthly payment than renting an apartment!

  3. Start building credit NOW.

If you haven’t already, find some ways to start establishing your credit. The most straightforward way is to go get a credit card—most banks have student or other entry level offers—and start making purchases with it and paying them off monthly.

  4. Focus on saving, even if you aren’t making much.

Start saving whatever you can so you’ll have enough for a downpayment. If you do it steadily for long enough, those little amounts add up!
