As a self-diagnosed Hawk-oholic I have some amazing personal news, after a four-season absence, the Atlanta Hawks are back in the playoffs. The current Hawks rosters have none of the players from the last playoff team and only five of the teams 17 players have ever been in the playoffs. Their oldest starter is 28. Despite their youth, the Hawks are in a great position to make some noise in the playoffs. Their play is peaking at the right time. Since April 1st they have had the best record in the NBA. They are also just really fun to team to watch. John Collins and Clint Capela are constant alley-oop threat. Trae Young and Bojan Bogdanovic can make a shot from literally anywhere on the court. Literally. Like “literally” meaning the literal definition of “literally”. Starting Sunday, Atlanta will be facing off against the New York Knicks. The first two games will be at Madison Square Garden and the Hawks will return home for Game 3 and 4. Tickets can be purchased but the dates are still TBD. Get on the bandwagon now and get a good seat while you can!
Underground Atlanta
If you grew up in or around Atlanta and are of a certain age, going to Underground Atlanta and tricking your visiting cousins into drinking Beverly at the old World of Coke, is a universal shared experience. But the aughts haven’t treated Underground well. It has constantly been in a state of flux since its “hay day” in the ’90s when the World of Coke originally opened there, with several different attempts to revitalize the famous landmark. Well, it looks like some real change and development are coming. Underground Atlanta will soon be adding to the number of vibrant food halls. As many as 21 vendors will soon be occupying some 28,000 square feet of space, the concept coming from the same people that just opened Chattahoochee Food Works. The food hall will also connect to the relocated Masquerade music venue that is eyeing a summer reopening.
Art to Die For
If you haven’t made it to Oakland Cemetery in a bit or ever before, this weekend will be a great time to go. Starting May 21 Oakland Cemetery will be hosting “Arts at Oakland”. An event that “showcases the work of six amazing regional artists in five installations across Oakland Cemetery via a self-guided map. The artistic installations will highlight the hidden stories that can be found within the gardens and architecture of Oakland Cemetery.” If you want to take a 90 minute guided tour of the art and to learn more about Oakland’s history and architecture, there are tickets for sale on their site. Otherwise, you can go on a self-guided tour during cemetery hours, for free, until the show ends on May 30th. Saturday, May 29th there will also be a Boutique pop-up, with local artisans selling hand-man crafts and foods.
Old 4th Ward get’s a “New” Old Hotel
The Wylie Hotel in Old 4th Ward is opening its doors to guests for the first time this week. The Wylie was originally a hotel when it was built in 1929. Renovations to turn the building into a swank modern 111 room hotel began back in 2019. Soon the Wylie will be opening its in-house restaurant Mrs. P’s Bar & Kitchen. Just a short walk down Ponce De Leon Ave sits the Clairemont Hotel, which just had its own swanky renovation and re-opening in 2018. It’s encouraging to see historical buildings along Ponce being remodeled to keep their charm but updated so that they can have a much larger life. Instead of them becoming parking lots or something like an Arby’s.
